Overuse of the word ropy.

WHAT I LOVED
As per usual with Paolo, tension and pacing are great. Some of the best I've ever read.

Ocho's character development from start to finish.

Here is a big duh - The character Tool. I love him so much, I'm going to create a section just for him.

TOOL - and the many ways I love his character
1) The sheer mass of him. Why is this so fascinating to me?
2) Animal-like qualities.
3) Intelligence. And not just stated, demonstrated time after time.
4) He gets treated badly by pretty much everyone, but yet he embodies the good part about humans better than any human.
5) He's stronger, smarter, and more fierce than any opponent.
6) He gets the job done.
7) He's a castoff, and I ache for him.

Well done, Paolo, well done.

The Drowned Cities Ship Breaker Paolo Bacigalupi Books Reviews

I was one of many eagerly waiting for the sequel to the outstanding Shipbreaker by Paolo Bacigalupi. I knew it would be hard to match or top Shipbreaker for excitement, intensity, fascinating characters and moral dilemmas, but I was hopeful. The Drowned Cities comes close to meeting my high expectations. The excitement and intensity are there and the moral dilemmas actually are more prominent in Drowned Cities, but the characters are not as intriguing. Maybe it is just that the characters are more beaten down by the violence and suffering they endure. The Drowned cities is not a sequel, it is a companion novel. The setting is the same, but intensified as the fighting has escalated since Shipbreaker. The characters are new. Mouse and Mahlia are refugees hiding out in the wetlands trying to stay alive. YA readers will not pick up on the strong similarities to current world events, but they are a huge part of The Drowned Cities - child soldiers being brain washed into amoral killing machines, warlords committing mass murder over control of resources, peace keepers pulling out and leaving chaos and violence to rule, both sides claiming to be the true patriots and moral saviors of the country. The Drowned Cities is set in futuristic USA, but it could be current day Sudan, Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia. What YA readers will love is the courage and loyalty of Mahlia. Mahlia is determined to save Mouse from the soldiers who have captured him even though she knows she will probably be killed in the process. Her only ally is Tool, the half man, half beastly predator from Shipbreaker. Tool is the most interesting character especially for readers who remember him from Shipbreaker. Tool has changed. Since Shipbreaker, Tool has discovered that he is more than his genetics, that he can set his own life plan and use his genetic modifications to help him achieve his goals - which does not mean he has become warm and friendly. He is still a terrifying, almost indestructible killer, but on his terms. Reluctant readers will probably be a little put off about two-thirds through the book when it gets a little bogged down in the history of the wars, but if they stick with it the action picks up after a few pages and goes non-stop until the nail-biting conclusion
This book is kind of a sequel to Ship Breaker. I say 'kind of' because it is never specifically mentioned as happening after the events from the first book. And the only reason you'd think so is because a secondary character from that book is a major character in this one.

The Drowned Citites is a "less nice" story than Ship Breaker, less straightforward, more violent, more filled with despair. This book explores the very grim scenario of civil war. There are not heroes here, only a lot of people trying their best to survive, to escape, to remain as sane as possible in the madness that surrounds them.

As other reviewers have said, this is a very violent story. As violent as civil wars get, there is a lot of upleasant words like "rape" and "mutilation" and "child soldiers" in this book. If you want to read a happy ending, don't let Ship Breaker misguide you, The Drowned Cities hasn't one.

This book feels also like the chance for one of Ship Breaker's best characters to shine by his own. Yes, this is a book about Tool. If you read Ship Breaker, you know what I'm talking about; if you didn't, well, trust me it's a good thing.

A good read, you'll be through it before you know it, and still you won't be dissapointed.
