fter reading another of Davidson’s books, I was looking forward to this one. The Breakaway tells the story of a young girl named Naomi who is kidnapped after being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Given her abusive boyfriend and absent parents, Naomi isn’t so sure she wants to go back.

Davidson Argyle does a great job of making the reader feel for Naomi and her situation, while showing growth in other characters as the story progresses. Co-kidnapper Jesse and Karen (Naomi’s mother) are good examples of this.

The story starts off strong, with Naomi awakening to find she’s been kidnapped and progresses from there. She does a great job of building the tension and almost making you root for the budding relationship between Naomi and Jesse. I say almost because I did find Naomi’s attraction towards one of her kidnappers disturbing. I can’t think of any other YA story dealing with the phenomenon of Stockholm syndrome, so this was new territory for me as a reader. Overall, a very engaging read that is sure to raise some questions and make you think. I’m looking forward to the follow-up, Pieces.

Just a story about stockholm syndrome, and not a very good one.
I read this in one sitting. Michelle Argyle's books are exceptional, and Breakaway was no different! This book grabbed me from the first page and kept me reading until the wee hours of the night.

Naomi gets sucked into a robbery gone bad for really being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The book begins with the kidnapping and you are immediately drawn into the dynamic of a girl determined to act like the perfect puppet for her own survival and kidnappers who treat her more like family than her own parents ever did. I felt immediately connected to Naomi and couldn't put the book down until I finished the last page!

The beautifully elegant writing and constant twists and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat right to the very last page. This is an absolute MUST READ!!

Another new Author for me.When the story first takes place you meet Naomi when she is 17 and after she has been kidnapped.I was a bit surprised that Naomi did not fight her captors a bit more but then who knows what I would have done?Her mom bothered me...I don't care who you are If your child is kidnapped you do anything in your power to get them back. I have to wonder if Naomi's mother Karen had shown her some amount of affection perhaps she would have fought back and tried to escape.

During the course of the book you meet Eric,Jesse,Evelyn and Steve.Honestly as much as I wanted to be angry at Evelyn,Steve and Jessie I couldnt.Eric,Well I had my moments of liking him until he had to go and be a jerk.During this book you will read about Naomi and Jesse's relationship.You know its wrong somewhat Stockholm Syndrome but then you can't help but enjoy seeing how it is going to play out and root for Jesse and Naomi.You will also meet Karen and Jason,Naomi's parents..who lack very much at parenting and finally you will know Brad who at the time of Her Kidnapping was her boyfriend.He is that type of guy that im sure looks good but isnt the kind you would want your daughter hanging out with.Especially how he treated Naomi.There was a part in the book that I had to cheer for Naomi that involves Brad.

Overall,I seriously enjoyed this book.(Now for my not professional sounding fan girl moment).As in I could NOT put it down.As in I did NOT want it to stop.As in OH MY GOD why did you have to end it like that?I will be SORELY disappointed if there is not a sequel.Well Done Michelle Davidson Argyle.Bravo Bravo.I hope many many readers enjoy it as much as I have.

Cover Talk I really like this cover. It took me forever to realize the shadow of the man on the wall had a gun. I thought that was a really nice addition to make the cover that much more intense.

First Impressions I bought this book on a whim when it was on sale on . The cover got my attention and when I realized it was about Stockholm Syndrome, I jumped at the chance to read it. I have a slightly ridiculous obsession with this psychological disorder and wanted to see how this book would present it.

First Line "The kidnapper looking down at Naomi held a book of poetry to his chest."

Characters Naomi is a neglected and emotionally damaged eighteen year old. Even though both her parents are alive and rich, the only relationship she has is with her abusive boyfriend. When she is kidnapped, she actually has a chance for a family. As weird and as sad as that is. I felt so bad for her and definitely connected with her. I was just as conflicted as she was every time she warred with herself on whether she should try to go home.

Jesse is the first person Naomi sees when she wakes up after being kidnapped. I hesitate to say he is good character, because I should hate him for kidnapping Naomi. But, really, he saved her. It makes more sense when the

Eric is quite the complex character. On the one hand, he wants Naomi to be at home and be a part of their family. On the other hand, he has no problem punching her in the face to keep her in line.

Evelyn is my favorite character. My heart breaks for her and I really don't like considering her a kidnapper. She treats Naomi wonderfully, cooks for her, does yoga with her, and gives her a much love as she can.

Naomi's parents come into the story a bit as well and I really liked seeing their characters develop. Normally, you would think since they are adults that there is not too much to change, but they definitely did.

Plot This book is unlike anything I have ever read. I have always liked books that deal with psychological issues and Stockholm Syndrome has always fascinated me. The thing that makes this story so interesting is that Naomi's life kind of sucked before she was kidnapped. Yes, she has a roof over her head, money, and was taken care of. But there was no love. Her parents were gone all the time, her boyfriend Brad was abusive. Aside from Brad, there was no mention of any friends at all.

When Naomi is taken to a house to live with her kidnappers, she is numb. But as a year passes, so much changes. She starts to genuinely care for her abductors. So many times she talks herself out of running away because it would hurt Evelyn, or Jesse.

The last few chapters were really interesting. I don't want to spoil anything, but Naomi is forced to face what happened to her and forced to look long and hard at her feelings. Are they real or did she just force them to survive?

Final Thoughts I really enjoyed this book. My emotions were all over the place and I honestly still can't decide if Naomi's feelings were strictly due to Stockholm Syndrome or if they were real. I can't wait to read Pieces, the sequel and see what happens with Naomi and Jesse.
